The coconut shell charcoal is the raw material required for the manufacture of activated carbon. The process of manufacturing activated carbon begins with the carbonization of coconut shell carbon or more popularly called charcoal. It is then activated by steam activation process, which has undergone an intricate treatment to increase their adsorption properties. The process of manufacturing this begins with uses the quality coconut shell. It is manufactured by burning shells of fully matured nuts in limited supply of air sufficient only for carbonization, but not for complete destruction. The output of charcoal in the traditional pith method is just below 30% yield. To obtain good quality charcoal, fully dried, clean, mature shells is recommended.

Activated carbon is a non-graphite form of carbon which could be produced from any carbonaceous material such as coconut shell, wood, etc. Activated carbon manufactured from coconut shell is considered superior to those obtained from other sources mainly because of small macrospores structure which renders it more effective for the adsorption of gas / vapor and for the removal of color and adour of compounds.
